The Honourable Chrystia Freeland is a globally respected leader in economics, diplomacy, and public policy. She served as Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and, from 2020 to 2024, as Minister of Finance, becoming the first woman in Canadian history to hold the role. Over five consecutive terms as a Member of Parliament, she played a central role in shaping Canada’s economic and international agenda during a period of significant global disruption.

As Minister of Finance, Freeland led Canada’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting jobs and businesses while maintaining the country’s strong fiscal position among G7 nations. Earlier in her career, she served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, where she led the successful renegotiation of NAFTA, and as Minister of International Trade, where she oversaw the landmark Canada-European Union trade agreement (CETA). Throughout her public service, she has been a leading advocate for democracy, human rights, and a rules-based international order.

Today, Freeland continues her global impact as Economic Advisor to the President of Ukraine and incoming Chief Executive Officer of the Rhodes Trust. Before entering politics, she built an international reputation as a journalist, editor, and author. A Rhodes Scholar educated at Harvard and Oxford, she has received numerous international honours recognizing her leadership on democracy, economic policy, and global cooperation.
